The Algorand Foundation supports the development and ecosystem growth of Algorand, a Layer 1 blockchain created by Silvio Micali, an MIT professor and Turing Award recipient. Founded in 2017, the project brought serious academic credentials to the blockchain space — Micali’s research in cryptography and distributed systems spans decades and directly informed Algorand’s protocol design.

Algorand uses a Pure Proof-of-Stake (PPoS) consensus mechanism where block proposers and validators are randomly selected from all token holders. This design ensures that participation isn’t limited to those who can afford expensive mining hardware or large staking deposits. The network achieves fast finality (under 4 seconds), low fees, and energy efficiency.

The blockchain has been particularly successful in attracting government and institutional use cases. The Marshall Islands chose Algorand for its sovereign digital currency. Italy’s financial guarantee institution (SACE) uses Algorand for digital surety bonds. FIFA selected Algorand as its official blockchain platform. These partnerships reflect the network’s focus on compliance and institutional-grade reliability.

Algorand’s technical features include atomic transfers (grouped transactions that either all succeed or all fail), Algorand Standard Assets (a built-in token creation system), and smart contracts written in a language called TEAL or using Python with the PyTEAL library. The recent introduction of AVM (Algorand Virtual Machine) improvements has expanded what developers can build on the platform.

The Algorand Foundation, based in Singapore, manages a significant ALGO token treasury and runs grant programs to fund ecosystem development. While the project faced challenges with token distribution and market conditions, its strong technical foundation and institutional partnerships provide a solid base. The foundation has been increasingly focused on DeFi growth and developer tools to broaden Algorand’s appeal beyond its enterprise niche.
