Amwell, formerly known as American Well, has been in the telehealth space since 2006. The company builds infrastructure that hospitals and health plans use to run their own virtual care programs. Rather than just offering a consumer-facing app, Amwell focuses on being the technology backbone behind other organizations’ digital health efforts.

The platform supports urgent care visits, behavioral health sessions, chronic disease management, and even telestroke programs. Amwell’s Converge platform, launched in 2021, brings together different care workflows into a single digital environment. Health systems can plug in their own EHR data and customize the experience for their patient populations.

Amwell works with over 55 health plan partners covering more than 80 million lives. The company went public in 2020 and has partnered with Google Cloud to build out its next-generation platform. It’s positioned itself as an enterprise-grade solution rather than a direct-to-consumer play, which sets it apart from many competitors in the space.
