Auth0 was founded in 2013 by Eugenio Pace and Matias Woloski in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The founders identified a recurring pain point: developers spent weeks or months building authentication systems from scratch for each new application, despite the underlying patterns being well-understood.
Auth0’s solution was an identity-as-a-service platform with SDKs for every major programming language and framework. Developers could add login, social sign-in, multi-factor authentication, and role-based access control to their apps with just a few lines of code. This developer-first approach differentiated Auth0 from enterprise-focused competitors.
The company relocated its headquarters to Bellevue, Washington, while maintaining significant engineering presence in Buenos Aires. Auth0 raised over $330 million in funding, reaching a valuation of $1.92 billion before its acquisition.
Okta acquired Auth0 in May 2021 for approximately $6.5 billion, one of the largest identity-sector deals ever. Under Okta, Auth0 became the foundation of the Customer Identity Cloud, focused on B2C and B2B application authentication.
Before the acquisition, Auth0 served over 9,000 enterprise customers and processed billions of logins monthly. The platform supports social logins (Google, GitHub, Facebook, etc.), passwordless authentication, and custom rules through its Actions pipeline.
Auth0’s influence on the identity space has been significant. Its documentation, community forums, and developer advocacy set a standard that other identity providers have tried to match. The product remains a separate platform within Okta’s portfolio, maintaining its own branding, SDKs, and developer community.
