Babylon Health launched in 2013 with big ambitions to make healthcare accessible and affordable through AI and telemedicine. The London-based company built an AI symptom checker that could triage patients before connecting them with doctors via video calls. At its peak, Babylon operated in multiple countries and served millions of users.

The company’s NHS GP at Hand service became hugely popular in London, letting patients register with a digital-first GP practice and get appointments within hours rather than weeks. Babylon also expanded into the US through partnerships with health systems and into Rwanda through a deal with the government to provide digital health services to the population.

However, Babylon’s rapid expansion and high cash burn caught up with it. The company went public via SPAC in 2021 but struggled financially afterward. By 2023, Babylon filed for bankruptcy and its assets were acquired by eMed. Despite its troubled ending, Babylon pushed the industry forward in terms of AI triage and digital-first primary care. Many of the ideas it pioneered are now standard features in other telehealth platforms.
