Capcom has been a pillar of Japanese gaming since its founding in 1979 by Kenzo Tsujimoto in Osaka. The company started in the arcade business and went on to create some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming history, including Street Fighter, Mega Man, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Devil May Cry.
Street Fighter II, released in 1991, essentially created the competitive fighting game genre and was the most profitable arcade game of its era. The series continues with Street Fighter 6 (2023), which has been praised as the best entry in years and brought the franchise back to the forefront of the fighting game community.
Resident Evil defined survival horror and has sold over 150 million copies across the franchise. Capcom’s recent strategy of remaking classic entries (RE2 Remake, RE3 Remake, RE4 Remake) has been enormously successful both critically and commercially. RE4 Remake sold over 7 million copies in its first year.
Monster Hunter is Capcom’s biggest earner by units sold. Monster Hunter: World (2018) became the company’s best-selling game ever at over 21 million copies, bringing the previously niche franchise to a global mainstream audience. Monster Hunter Rise followed with strong sales on Switch and PC.
Capcom’s financial performance since 2018 has been remarkable. The company has posted record profits for multiple consecutive years, driven by a focused strategy of leveraging its deep catalog of beloved IPs. Their RE Engine, developed in-house, powers most of their modern titles and has been praised for its performance and visual quality.
The company is publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and has consistently been one of the best-performing Japanese gaming stocks in recent years.
