Capsule set out to fix the pharmacy experience when it launched in New York City in 2015. The traditional pharmacy model — long waits, confusing insurance issues, inconvenient hours — was ripe for disruption. Capsule built a full-stack pharmacy with same-day delivery, a clean mobile app, and actual humans who handle insurance problems and prior authorizations.

The service works simply: doctors send prescriptions to Capsule, the pharmacy team handles insurance verification and any issues, then a courier delivers the medications for free on the same day. The app lets users manage refills, see their full medication history, and chat with pharmacists. It’s the kind of experience people expect from modern tech companies but rarely get from healthcare.

Capsule initially operated in New York City before expanding to other major US markets. The company was acquired by Japanese pharmaceutical distributor Suzuken in 2022 for around $300 million. Under new ownership, Capsule has continued growing its delivery footprint. The company competes with Amazon Pharmacy and traditional pharmacy chains, but its focus on the human touch — pharmacists who proactively reach out about medication interactions or cheaper alternatives — remains its biggest differentiator.
