Character.ai was founded in 2021 by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, both former Google Brain researchers who worked on LaMDA. Headquartered in Menlo Park, California, the platform allows users to create AI characters with distinct personalities and chat with them in natural conversation.
The company raised $150 million at a $1 billion valuation from a16z in 2023. By mid-2024, Character.ai was averaging over 20 million monthly active users, with some of the highest engagement metrics in consumer AI — users spent an average of nearly 30 minutes per session on the platform.
In August 2024, Google signed a deal to license Character.ai’s technology and brought back founders Shazeer and De Freitas in a transaction valued at roughly $2.7 billion. The remaining company continues operating under new leadership, led by interim CEO Dominic Perella.
Character.ai’s success demonstrated massive consumer demand for personalized AI interactions beyond productivity. Users create characters ranging from fictional personas to educational tutors. The platform’s ability to maintain consistent character personalities across long conversations set it apart from general-purpose chatbots and proved that entertainment and social AI is a viable market category.
