Clearleft was founded in 2005 in Brighton, England, by Andy Budd, Richard Rutter, and Jeremy Keith — three well-known figures in the web standards community. The consultancy has built its reputation on user experience design, design systems, and strategic research for clients who need more than just a pretty website.

The team works primarily on UX strategy, user research, design system creation, and front-end architecture. Notable clients have included the BBC, Penguin, Nike, and the UK Government. Clearleft tends to take on projects where the challenge is systemic — rethinking how an organization approaches design at scale — rather than one-off website builds.

Clearleft is also deeply embedded in the design community. They founded and run dConstruct (a digital culture conference), UX London, and Ampersand (a web typography conference). Jeremy Keith’s blog and books on progressive enhancement and web architecture have influenced a generation of front-end developers.

The consultancy has stayed deliberately small, typically under 30 people. They’ve resisted the pressure to scale into a large agency, preferring to maintain quality and take on work they find genuinely interesting. Their “Designops” practice has become a significant part of their business, helping large organizations improve how their design teams operate.

Clearleft represents a specific philosophy: that good design comes from understanding people first, and that the web should be accessible, performant, and built on open standards.
