Clockify launched in 2017 from the team at CAKE.com (formerly Clockify Inc.), based in San Francisco with development operations in Serbia. The product’s pitch was bold: unlimited free time tracking for unlimited users. That pricing model helped it grow to over 4.5 million users faster than most competitors.
At its core, Clockify is a timer. Users start and stop a clock, tag entries by project and task, and generate reports. But it’s grown well beyond that. The platform now includes timesheets, scheduling, expense tracking, time-off management, and invoicing. There’s a kiosk mode for on-site teams and GPS tracking for field workers.
Clockify’s reporting is surprisingly detailed for a free tool. Managers can run summary, detailed, and weekly reports, filter by team member or project, and export everything to PDF or Excel. The paid tiers unlock features like budgeting, labor cost tracking, audit logs, and custom branding.
The parent company CAKE.com has since launched complementary products — Pumble (team messaging) and Plaky (project management) — creating a mini productivity suite. Clockify remains the flagship product, though, and it’s especially popular with freelancers, small agencies, and remote teams that need time tracking without a hefty subscription.
