Codecademy launched in 2011 with a mission to make coding accessible to everyone. Co-founders Zach Sims and Ryan Bubinski believed that traditional education wasn’t keeping up with the growing demand for programming skills, so they built a platform where anyone could start coding right in their browser — no setup required.

The platform’s interactive approach sets it apart. Instead of watching videos, learners write real code in a built-in editor and get instant feedback. This learn-by-doing method covers languages and technologies including Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, SQL, React, Ruby, C++, and many more. Courses are structured as guided paths that take learners from beginner to job-ready.

Codecademy offers both free and paid tiers. The free plan covers basic courses, while Codecademy Pro unlocks quizzes, projects, skill paths, and certificate programs. Pro also includes practice exercises and interview prep content. The platform has helped over 50 million learners start their coding journeys since launch.

In 2022, Skillsoft acquired Codecademy, bringing it under a larger corporate learning umbrella. Despite the acquisition, Codecademy continues to operate as a standalone product. The platform has also added career paths — structured curricula designed to prepare learners for specific roles like front-end developer, data scientist, or back-end engineer — complete with portfolio projects and real-world scenarios.
