Codemasters is a British game studio that’s been synonymous with racing games for nearly four decades. The Darling brothers — David and Richard — founded the company in 1986 in Warwickshire, England. While Codemasters originally made all kinds of games (including the famous Dizzy platformer series on the ZX Spectrum), it eventually went all-in on the racing genre.

The studio’s racing pedigree is unmatched. The TOCA series, Colin McRae Rally, and the DiRT franchise established Codemasters as the go-to developer for realistic driving games. The F1 series, which the studio has developed under license from Formula One since 2009, became one of the most consistent annual sports franchises in gaming. Grid and Project CARS (acquired from Slightly Mad Studios) round out a comprehensive racing portfolio.

Electronic Arts acquired Codemasters in early 2021 for $1.2 billion, outbidding Take-Two Interactive in a high-profile acquisition battle. Under EA, Codemasters continues to operate its existing franchises, with F1 remaining the flagship annual release. The studio’s proprietary EGO engine powers most of its titles and is considered one of the best racing-specific game engines in the industry.

Codemasters operates from multiple UK studios, including its historic Southam headquarters and facilities in Birmingham and Cheshire. The combined headcount across these locations exceeds 700 people. While the EA acquisition brought corporate resources, it also raised fan concerns about whether Codemasters would retain its distinctive identity within a larger publisher’s machinery.
