Critical Mass launched in Calgary in 1996, which isn’t exactly where you’d expect a world-class digital agency to set up shop. But that Canadian prairie origin story turned out to be an advantage — lower overhead meant they could invest more in talent and less in Manhattan rent.

The agency is now part of Omnicom Group and runs offices in Calgary, Chicago, Nashville, Toronto, San Jose (Costa Rica), and Bogota. Their client roster includes Nissan, AT&T, Citi, and Nike.

Critical Mass specializes in what they call “experience design at scale” — building connected digital ecosystems that span websites, apps, CRM, and emerging channels. They’ve been particularly strong in the automotive sector, building configurator experiences and ownership platforms for major car brands.

Their design approach leans heavily on research. Every project starts with behavioral data analysis and usability studies before a single pixel gets pushed. The agency runs a dedicated UX research lab that tests prototypes with real users throughout the development cycle.

Critical Mass has earned recognition from the Webby Awards, Communication Arts, and the FWA. They’ve also built a reputation for employee satisfaction — they’ve landed on multiple “Best Places to Work” lists in both Canada and the US.
