Dribbble started as a show-and-tell for designers and has grown into one of the biggest creative communities on the web. Founded in 2009 by Dan Cederholm and Rich Thornett, the platform was originally invite-only, which gave it an exclusive feel and helped maintain a high quality bar for the work shared there.

The name comes from basketball — designers share “shots” of their work, and the whole experience is built around quick visual previews. Over the years, Dribbble has expanded well beyond a portfolio site. It now includes a job board, a freelance marketplace, and design education resources through Dribbble Learn.

The platform hosts millions of designers and gets over 50 million monthly visitors browsing design work. It’s become a go-to resource for companies looking to hire designers, with a dedicated hiring feature that lets recruiters search for talent based on skill, location, and availability.

In 2017, Dribbble was acquired by Tiny, a Canadian holding company. Under new ownership, the platform expanded its revenue model with Pro subscriptions, job listings, and marketplace features. The invite system was eventually dropped, making the platform open to all designers.

Dribbble’s influence on design aesthetics has been both praised and criticized. Some argue it’s pushed design toward visually impressive but impractical concepts — a phenomenon sometimes called “Dribbble-driven design.” Regardless, it’s remained the go-to place for designers to build their reputation and find work.
