Duolingo was founded in 2011 by Luis von Ahn (who also created CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA) and Severin Hacker. Their goal was to make language learning free and accessible to everyone. The platform turned that vision into the most downloaded education app in the world, with over 500 million registered users learning more than 40 languages.

The app’s secret sauce is gamification. Lessons are broken into tiny, 5-minute exercises that feel like a game — you earn XP, maintain streaks, compete on leaderboards, and unlock achievements. The green owl mascot, Duo, sends persistent (sometimes hilariously passive-aggressive) reminders to keep your streak alive. This design has proven remarkably effective at keeping people coming back.

Duolingo’s courses cover everything from widely studied languages like Spanish, French, and Japanese to less common ones like Hawaiian, Navajo, and High Valyrian (from Game of Thrones). The platform uses a mix of translation exercises, listening comprehension, speaking practice, and fill-in-the-blank questions, powered by AI that adapts to each learner’s strengths and weaknesses.

The company went public in 2021 and has continued to grow rapidly. Duolingo operates on a freemium model — the core experience is free with ads, while Super Duolingo removes ads and adds features like unlimited hearts and progress quizzes. The platform has also expanded into math and music education with separate Duolingo courses, and introduced Duolingo Max with AI-powered conversation practice.
