Ecwid was founded in 2009 by Ruslan Fazlyev in Ulyanovsk, Russia, with the idea that merchants shouldn’t have to rebuild their websites to start selling online. The name stands for “e-commerce widget” — you embed a snippet of code into any existing site and get a fully functional store.
The platform works with virtually any website builder, CMS, or social media profile. Merchants paste a few lines of code and get product listings, a shopping cart, checkout, and inventory management. It syncs across all channels — so if someone buys through Facebook, the inventory updates on the website automatically.
Lightspeed Commerce acquired Ecwid in 2021 for approximately $500 million. The acquisition gave Lightspeed a self-serve e-commerce solution to complement its POS-focused product for brick-and-mortar retailers. Ecwid kept its brand and continued operating semi-independently.
Ecwid supports selling on Instagram, Facebook, Amazon, eBay, Google Shopping, and TikTok from a single dashboard. The free plan lets merchants list up to 5 products — which is genuinely free, not a trial — making it a popular entry point for first-time sellers.
More than 200,000 merchants use Ecwid across 175 countries. The platform handles 50+ payment providers, automatic tax calculations, and real-time shipping rate quotes. The team has grown to about 300 employees since the Lightspeed acquisition, with offices in San Diego and engineering teams in Europe.
