Fluence Energy emerged from a joint venture between Siemens and AES Corporation in 2018, combining decades of energy storage deployment experience into a standalone company. The idea was straightforward: build the best-in-class energy storage products and pair them with software smart enough to optimize revenue across complex electricity markets.

The hardware side centers on Fluence’s modular energy storage products — factory-assembled battery enclosures that can be configured from small commercial systems to grid-scale installations exceeding hundreds of megawatt-hours. The Gridstack product line serves utilities and large-scale developers, while Edgestack targets commercial and industrial customers. Fluence has deployed or contracted over 20 GW of energy storage across more than 40 markets worldwide.

The software platform, Mosaic, is where Fluence adds unique value. Mosaic uses AI to optimize battery dispatch in real time — deciding when to charge, when to discharge, and which grid services to provide based on market prices, weather forecasts, and grid conditions. Customers using Mosaic have reported significant revenue increases compared to basic dispatch strategies. Fluence went public in 2021 and generates roughly $2.7 billion in annual revenue. The company employs around 1,800 people with offices in Arlington (Virginia), Munich, Melbourne, and several other cities. As battery storage becomes essential for integrating renewables into the grid, Fluence’s combination of hardware, services, and AI-powered optimization positions it at the center of the energy transition.
