Forest was created in 2014 by Seekrtech, a small studio based in Taipei, Taiwan. The app takes a simple idea — stay off your phone — and wraps it in a charming visual mechanic. When you want to focus, you plant a virtual tree. If you leave the app before the timer ends, the tree dies. Stick with it, and you grow a forest.

The concept resonated immediately. Forest has been downloaded over 15 million times and has won multiple awards, including an Apple Design Award honorable mention. It’s especially popular among students and remote workers who struggle with phone addiction during work hours.

Forest also has a real-world component. Through a partnership with Trees for the Future, users can spend virtual coins earned through focus sessions to plant actual trees. The app has funded over 2 million real trees planted across Africa and Asia.

The app supports detailed statistics, tags for different focus categories, and a social feature where friends can plant trees together. There’s a Chrome extension for desktop focus sessions too. The team has kept the product simple and hasn’t tried to turn it into a full productivity suite.

It’s a small app from a small team, but Forest’s impact on the focus timer category has been outsized. Many similar apps have appeared since, but Forest remains the most recognized name in gamified focus tools.
