Hive was founded in 2015 in New York City by John Furneaux and Eric Typaldos. The idea was to build a project management tool that actually adapts to how different teams work, rather than forcing everyone into one methodology.
The platform offers multiple project views — Gantt, Kanban, table, calendar, and portfolio — and lets teams switch between them freely. What’s different about Hive is that it bundles native email, chat, and file sharing directly into the workspace. Instead of jumping between Slack, email, and a PM tool, teams can handle everything in one window.
Hive also introduced HiveMind, an AI assistant that can write project briefs, summarize meeting notes, and generate status updates. The feature was one of the earlier AI integrations in the PM space when it launched in early 2023.
Notable customers include Starbucks, Toyota, and IBM. The company has taken a user-driven development approach — many features on the roadmap come from public voting on their feature request forum. Hive raised $10 million in Series A funding and has remained a relatively lean operation compared to competitors. It’s particularly popular with marketing and operations teams that want flexibility without the overhead of enterprise-grade tools.
