HubSpot was founded in 2006 by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Halligan and Shah literally wrote the book on inbound marketing (it’s called “Inbound Marketing”) and built HubSpot to practice what they preached. The company went public on the NYSE in 2014 and has grown into one of the most valuable SaaS companies, with a market cap exceeding $30 billion at various points.

The platform offers a full suite of business tools organized into Hubs: Marketing Hub (email, social, ads, landing pages), Sales Hub (CRM, email tracking, meetings, pipeline), Service Hub (help desk, knowledge base, feedback), CMS Hub (website builder), and Operations Hub (data sync, automation). The free CRM tier has been a powerful growth engine, drawing in millions of users who later upgrade.

HubSpot serves over 228,000 customers in more than 135 countries. Annual revenue exceeded $2 billion in 2023. The company is especially popular with small and mid-sized businesses that want an all-in-one platform rather than piecing together separate tools for marketing, sales, and support.

HubSpot has built a massive educational ecosystem through HubSpot Academy (free certifications in marketing, sales, and service), a popular blog, and an active community. In 2024, Google explored acquiring HubSpot but the deal didn’t materialize. The company has been adding AI features through ChatSpot and other tools, automating content creation, email writing, and data analysis. HubSpot’s approach of offering a generous free tier and growing with customers has proven remarkably effective.
