Immutable is an Australian Web3 gaming company building infrastructure to bring digital asset ownership to mainstream video games. Founded in 2018 by James and Robbie Ferguson in Sydney, the company has become the leading blockchain platform specifically focused on gaming — a sector many consider the most promising path to mass crypto adoption.

The company operates two main products. Immutable X is a Layer 2 scaling solution for NFTs built on Ethereum using StarkWare’s zero-knowledge rollup technology. It enables gas-free minting and trading of NFTs with instant transaction confirmation, solving the cost and speed problems that made Ethereum impractical for gaming use cases where players might make dozens of microtransactions per session.

Immutable zkEVM, launched in partnership with Polygon, takes things further by providing a full EVM-compatible environment powered by zero-knowledge proofs. This gives game developers access to Ethereum’s security and liquidity while maintaining the performance needed for gaming applications. Developers can use familiar Solidity tooling and deploy existing smart contracts without modification.

The company has signed partnerships with major gaming studios and publishers. Games like Illuvium, Gods Unchained (developed by Immutable’s own studio), Guild of Guardians, and titles from GameStop’s NFT initiative have built on Immutable’s infrastructure. The platform has also attracted interest from traditional gaming companies exploring blockchain integration.

Immutable has raised over $300 million in funding, including a Series C that valued the company at $2.5 billion. The IMX token is used for staking, governance, and paying protocol fees.

Based in Sydney with offices in other cities, Immutable employs several hundred people and continues to bet that gaming will be the gateway that brings the next wave of users into Web3. Their focus on developer experience and zero gas fees positions them well for a market where mainstream gamers won’t tolerate the friction typical of blockchain interactions.
