Informatica was founded in 1993 by Gaurav Dhillon and Diaz Nesamoney in Redwood City, California. The company started by solving a fundamental enterprise problem: getting data from one system to another reliably. Three decades later, Informatica has grown into the largest independent data management company in the world.

The Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) is Informatica’s AI-powered platform. It covers data integration, data quality, data governance, data cataloging, master data management, and data privacy. The platform uses what Informatica calls CLAIRE — an AI engine that automates metadata discovery, mapping, and data quality improvements.

Informatica went public in 1999, was taken private by Permira and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board for $5.3 billion in 2015, and then returned to public markets in 2021. The second IPO reflected the company’s transformation from an on-premises ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) vendor into a cloud-first data management platform.

The company serves over 5,500 customers in more than 100 countries. Major customers include financial institutions, healthcare organizations, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies. The platform processes trillions of cloud transactions monthly.

Annual revenue reached approximately $1.6 billion in 2024, with cloud subscription revenue growing significantly faster than the overall business. Informatica has been investing heavily in making its cloud platform the successor to its legacy PowerCenter product, which remains widely deployed.

Amit Walia became CEO in 2020 and has driven the cloud transition strategy. Informatica employs around 5,800 people globally.
