Insomniac Games has earned a reputation as one of the most productive and consistently excellent studios in the industry. Founded in 1994 by Ted Price in Burbank, California, the studio was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2019 for a reported $229 million, a figure that looks like a steal given what followed.
Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) was the game that transformed Insomniac from a respected studio into a blockbuster machine. The PS4 exclusive sold over 33 million copies and became the best-selling superhero game of all time. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales followed as a PS5 launch title, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023) was the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios title at launch, hitting 10 million copies in under a month.
Before Spider-Man, Insomniac was known for the Ratchet & Clank franchise (charming action-platformers that have spanned two decades), the Spyro the Dragon trilogy on PS1, and the Resistance shooter series on PS3. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (2021) was a PS5 showcase that demonstrated the console’s SSD capabilities by seamlessly teleporting players between entire worlds.
Insomniac’s development speed is almost unbelievable. Between 2018 and 2023, the studio shipped four major titles: Spider-Man, Miles Morales, Rift Apart, and Spider-Man 2. Most AAA studios struggle to release one game in that timeframe.
The studio suffered a significant data breach in December 2023 when the Rhysida ransomware group leaked 1.67 terabytes of internal data, revealing details about upcoming projects including a Wolverine game. The breach was one of the largest in gaming industry history.
Marvel’s Wolverine is Insomniac’s next confirmed project, continuing the studio’s relationship with Marvel and PlayStation’s strategy of building a connected gaming universe.
