Intercom was founded in 2011 by Eoghan McCabe, Des Traynor, Ciaran Lee, and David Barrett in Dublin, Ireland. The company has raised over $240 million in funding and is now headquartered in San Francisco with major offices in Dublin, London, and other cities.

Intercom started as a simple customer messaging tool — a chat widget that let businesses talk to website visitors in real time. Over the years, it’s evolved into a comprehensive customer communication platform that covers live chat, AI chatbots, help desk ticketing, email campaigns, product tours, and a knowledge base.

The platform serves over 25,000 businesses, including companies like Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and thousands of SaaS startups. Intercom has been particularly popular with tech companies because of its developer-friendly approach and modern interface. For many startups, adding the Intercom widget to their site is one of the first things they do after launch.

Intercom’s AI chatbot, Fin, launched in 2023 and was one of the first customer service bots powered by large language models. Fin can answer customer questions using a company’s existing help center content, handling a significant percentage of support queries without human intervention. The platform also offers targeted messaging based on user behavior, custom bots for qualifying leads, and detailed reporting on conversation metrics. Intercom competes with Zendesk, Freshdesk, and newer players, but its combination of messaging, automation, and AI keeps it at the forefront of customer communication tools.
