Lucid Motors went after the premium end of the EV market and delivered. The Lucid Air sedan launched with an EPA-rated range of 516 miles on the Dream Edition — the longest range of any production EV at the time. That figure wasn’t just a spec-sheet number; it came from genuinely efficient drivetrain engineering led by Peter Rawlinson, the former chief engineer of the Tesla Model S.

The company’s in-house powertrain technology is the core differentiator. Lucid designs and manufactures its own motors, inverters, battery packs, and battery management systems. The result is a drivetrain unit compact enough to fit in a carry-on suitcase but powerful enough to produce over 1,200 horsepower in the Sapphire performance trim. The Air Grand Touring earned MotorTrend’s Car of the Year in 2022.

Lucid builds its vehicles at a factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, with an initial capacity of 34,000 units per year and plans to scale further. The Gravity SUV entered production in late 2024, expanding the lineup into the high-demand crossover segment. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is the majority shareholder, providing a financial backstop and a pathway to a second factory in Saudi Arabia. Lucid has around 7,000 employees and continues to bring prices down with new Air trims while maintaining the performance and range advantage that defines the brand.
