Lucidchart was founded in 2010 by Karl Sun, Ben Dilts, and Cameron Christensen in South Jordan, Utah. The company set out to replace Microsoft Visio with a cloud-native alternative that actually worked in the browser.

The platform supports a wide range of diagram types: flowcharts, process maps, network diagrams, org charts, wireframes, ER diagrams, UML diagrams, and more. The shape library is extensive, with specific icon sets for AWS, Azure, GCP, Cisco, and other technical environments.

Real-time collaboration is a core feature — multiple users can edit the same diagram simultaneously. Comments, revision history, and presentation mode make it useful for both creating and sharing diagrams. The data linking feature can generate org charts or diagrams from spreadsheet data automatically.

Lucidchart integrates with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Atlassian products, Slack, and many others. You can embed live diagrams in Confluence pages or Google Docs, keeping documentation up to date.

The parent company, Lucid Software, also offers Lucidspark (a virtual whiteboard) and Lucidscale (cloud visualization). Together, they serve over 70 million users across 180 countries.

Pricing includes a limited free tier, Individual plans at $7.95/month, and Team plans at $9/user/month. Enterprise plans add admin controls, SSO, and advanced security features.

Lucid Software has remained headquartered in South Jordan and employs over 1,000 people. They’ve raised around $200 million in total funding and are reportedly profitable.
