MercadoPago was launched in 2003 as the payment solution for MercadoLibre, Latin America’s largest e-commerce marketplace. MercadoLibre itself was founded in 1999 by Marcos Galperin and trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker MELI.
What started as a PayPal-like escrow service for marketplace transactions has become the dominant fintech platform in Latin America. MercadoPago now operates as a standalone digital wallet and financial services ecosystem that extends far beyond MercadoLibre’s marketplace.
The platform offers mobile payments, QR code payments at physical stores, peer-to-peer transfers, bill payments, prepaid card top-ups, and online checkout for merchants. MercadoPago’s digital account lets users store money, earn returns on balances, and access a debit card.
MercadoPago also runs a lending business (Mercado Credito) that provides working capital loans to merchants and personal loans to consumers, underwritten using transaction data from the marketplace. The credit portfolio has grown to several billion dollars, with low default rates thanks to the proprietary data advantage.
The platform operates in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, and Peru. Brazil is by far the largest market, accounting for the majority of payment volume. MercadoLibre’s fintech segment generated over $7 billion in revenue in 2023, with total payment volume exceeding $170 billion across all markets. MercadoPago’s growth rate has consistently outpaced the e-commerce side. It’s headquartered in Buenos Aires with major offices in Sao Paulo.
