Mistral AI was founded in April 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix — former researchers from Meta and Google DeepMind. Based in Paris, the company raised $415 million in its Series A round just months after founding, and went on to raise over $1 billion total, reaching a valuation above $6 billion by early 2025.
What made Mistral stand out was the speed and quality of its releases. Mistral 7B, their first model released in September 2023, outperformed much larger models on many benchmarks despite being relatively small. They followed it with Mixtral 8x7B (a mixture-of-experts model), Mistral Medium, Mistral Large, and various specialized models.
Mistral has taken a hybrid approach to openness. Their smaller models are released with open weights, which the community can download and modify. Larger models are available through their API platform, La Plateforme, and through cloud partnerships with Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and AWS.
The company has become a point of pride for European tech — it’s the first EU-based AI company to seriously compete with US and Chinese labs on model quality. Mistral also played a role in EU AI regulation discussions, advocating for policies that don’t disadvantage European AI development. With a small team of around 60 people in 2024, Mistral punches well above its weight in terms of research output and model performance.
