MuleSoft was founded in 2006 by Ross Mason in San Francisco. Mason created the Mule ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) as an open-source project before turning it into a commercial company. The core insight was that enterprises needed a faster way to connect their growing number of applications and data sources.

The Anypoint Platform is MuleSoft’s flagship product. It provides tools for designing, building, and managing APIs and integrations. The platform uses a concept called API-led connectivity, where organizations create reusable API layers — system APIs that connect to back-end systems, process APIs that handle business logic, and experience APIs that serve specific channels.

Salesforce acquired MuleSoft for $6.5 billion in 2018, making it one of Salesforce’s largest acquisitions at the time. Under Salesforce’s ownership, MuleSoft has been integrated into the broader Salesforce ecosystem while continuing to serve as a standalone integration platform for non-Salesforce customers.

MuleSoft Composer, a simpler integration tool for business users, expanded the company’s reach beyond IT departments. The RPA (Robotic Process Automation) capabilities added in 2022 let organizations automate legacy systems that lack APIs.

The platform handles more than 100 billion transactions per month across its customer base. Organizations like Coca-Cola, Unilever, Barclays, and Cisco use MuleSoft to connect hundreds of applications.

Before the Salesforce acquisition, MuleSoft had gone public in 2017 and reached approximately $300 million in annual revenue. As part of Salesforce, MuleSoft’s integration platform generates over $1.5 billion in annual revenue. The platform supports more than 400 pre-built connectors for common enterprise systems.
