Naughty Dog has been a Sony first-party studio since 2001 and is widely considered one of the greatest game developers of all time. Founded in 1984 by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin (when they were teenagers), the studio has reinvented itself with each console generation while consistently delivering technical showcases.
Crash Bandicoot (1996) was the studio’s breakthrough, becoming the unofficial mascot of the original PlayStation. Jak and Daxter brought the studio into the PS2 era. But it was Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (2007) that established Naughty Dog as a narrative powerhouse. The Uncharted series, particularly Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, set new standards for cinematic action in games. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End sold over 37 million copies.
The Last of Us (2013) elevated the studio to an entirely different level. The post-apocalyptic survival game’s story about Joel and Ellie is often cited as the medium’s most emotionally impactful narrative. It won over 200 Game of the Year awards. The Last of Us Part II (2020) was more divisive among fans but swept nearly every major award and sold over 10 million copies.
The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, became one of the biggest shows on television in 2023 and won multiple Emmy Awards, cementing the franchise’s position as a cross-media entertainment property.
Naughty Dog’s technical capabilities are legendary. Each of their games pushes PlayStation hardware to its limits. The studio’s proprietary engine is one of the most advanced in the industry, and their animation, motion capture, and facial performance technologies are regularly cited as industry-leading.
Neil Druckmann, who co-directed The Last of Us and directed Part II, leads the studio as co-president. The team is working on new projects, though Naughty Dog is characteristically secretive about what’s next.
