Nothing launched with a mission to make consumer electronics exciting again. Carl Pei, who co-founded OnePlus, started Nothing in 2020 with the idea that most tech products had become boring black rectangles. The company’s transparent designs — showing internal components through clear panels — created a visual identity unlike anything else on the market.

The Ear (1) wireless earbuds in 2021 were Nothing’s first product. The transparent stem design looked genuinely fresh, and the sound quality competed with AirPods at a lower price. But the Phone (1) in 2022 was the real statement. Its transparent back panel revealed a distinctive Glyph Interface — a system of LED strips that lit up in patterns for different notifications, creating a visual language that replaced the constant screen-checking habit.

Nothing Phone (2) refined the concept with a brighter Glyph display and more customization options. The company also launched the CMF sub-brand targeting budget-conscious buyers with the CMF Phone 1 and modular accessories. Running Nothing OS — a clean Android skin — their phones offer a stock-like experience with thoughtful customizations.

The company’s raised over $250 million in funding and sold millions of devices, mostly in European and Asian markets. Nothing’s approach to marketing leans heavily on community building and controlled hype — product reveals are events, and limited drops create scarcity. Whether transparent design is a lasting trend or a novelty remains to be seen, but Nothing’s proven there’s demand for tech products with genuine personality.
