OutSystems was founded in 2001 by Paulo Rosado in Lisbon, Portugal. Rosado had been frustrated by how long traditional software development took and set out to build a platform that could dramatically speed up application delivery without sacrificing quality.
The company’s platform lets developers build full-stack web and mobile applications using a visual, model-driven approach. Unlike some low-code tools that target citizen developers, OutSystems is designed for professional developers who need to build complex, scalable applications. The platform generates standard code (.NET or Java) that can be deployed anywhere.
OutSystems AI Agent Builder and integration capabilities support building AI-powered applications. The platform handles everything from the front-end interface to back-end logic, data models, and integrations with existing enterprise systems like SAP, Salesforce, and legacy databases.
The company raised $150 million at a $9.5 billion valuation in 2021 from investors including Abdiel Capital and Tiger Global. It was one of the highest valuations ever for a low-code platform company at the time.
OutSystems serves over 700 enterprise customers across industries including financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and government. Major customers include Toyota, Humana, and Schneider Electric. The platform is particularly popular in Europe, where the company has deep roots.
Rosado relocated the company headquarters to Boston in 2018 to be closer to the U.S. enterprise market, while maintaining significant engineering operations in Lisbon. OutSystems employs more than 2,500 people and operates in over 80 countries.
