Paradox Interactive dominates the grand strategy genre like no other company in gaming. Founded in 1999 as a spinoff from the board game and strategy publisher Target Games, the Swedish company built its entire identity around deeply complex simulation games that let players rewrite history.

The company’s flagship titles include Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Stellaris, Victoria, and Cities: Skylines. These games are famous for their staggering depth — Crusader Kings III lets you manage medieval dynasties down to individual character traits and family drama, while Victoria 3 simulates the entire global economy of the 19th century.

Paradox pioneered what’s now called the “DLC-driven” business model in gaming. Rather than releasing sequels every few years, the company supports each title with years of paid expansions, flavor packs, and content updates. Crusader Kings II received DLC for nearly a decade. This model generates predictable recurring revenue and keeps player communities engaged long after launch.

The studio went public on the Nasdaq First North exchange in 2016 and has grown considerably since. It acquired Harebrained Schemes (BattleTech) and Triumph Studios (Age of Wonders), and it also runs a publishing arm for external studios. Paradox has around 600 employees across offices in Stockholm, Malmo, Barcelona, and Delft. Revenue regularly exceeds $200 million annually, driven primarily by that deep catalog of strategy titles and their ongoing DLC streams.
