Postmark was created by Wildbit (now part of ActiveCampaign after a 2022 acquisition). The service launched in 2010 with a clear mission: deliver transactional emails faster and more reliably than anyone else.

The company’s approach is unusual in the email space. They don’t allow bulk marketing email on their platform. By keeping marketing and transactional email separate, Postmark maintains extremely high deliverability rates and fast delivery times — most emails arrive in under 10 seconds.

This focus has earned Postmark a reputation among developers who take email delivery seriously. When your password reset or payment confirmation needs to arrive instantly, Postmark delivers. They publish their delivery stats publicly, which is something few competitors do.

The Message Streams feature lets you separate different types of email (receipts, notifications, alerts) into distinct streams with their own settings and tracking. Inbound email processing is also supported, allowing your application to receive and parse incoming emails.

Postmark’s templates system uses Mustachio (their Handlebars-compatible engine) and includes a set of well-designed, pre-built templates for common transactional emails. The template previews and testing tools are genuinely helpful.

Pricing is based on email volume: $15/month for 10,000 emails, scaling up from there. There’s no free tier, but they offer a trial with 100 emails.

After the ActiveCampaign acquisition, Postmark has continued operating as a distinct product. The team is small but dedicated, and the developer community around it is loyal. If transactional email delivery is critical to your application, Postmark is consistently at the top of recommendation lists.
