Proxmox Server Solutions is an Austrian company that develops Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE), a popular open-source platform for enterprise virtualization. The software combines KVM hypervisor and LXC container support with a web-based management interface, software-defined storage, and networking features.

Proxmox VE has gained a massive following, especially among homelabbers, SMBs, and hosting providers looking for a free alternative to VMware’s vSphere. The platform supports live migration, high availability clustering, built-in backup tools, and Ceph integration for distributed storage.

The company also develops Proxmox Mail Gateway (an email security solution) and Proxmox Backup Server (a dedicated backup management tool). All products follow an open-source model with optional paid support subscriptions.

After Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware in 2023 led to significant licensing changes, Proxmox saw a huge surge in interest from companies looking to migrate away from VMware. The platform’s KVM-based architecture and familiar web UI made it an attractive alternative. Proxmox VE is based on Debian Linux and can be installed on almost any x86 hardware.
