Railway was founded in 2020 by Jake Cooper in San Francisco. Cooper started the company while still in his early twenties, aiming to build the deployment platform he wished existed — something with the simplicity of Heroku but modernized for current development practices.

Railway’s core appeal is its developer experience. You connect a GitHub repo, and Railway detects the language and framework, builds the project, and deploys it automatically. The platform supports Node.js, Python, Go, Rust, Ruby, Java, PHP, and basically anything that runs in a Docker container. Databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB) can be provisioned with a click.

What sets Railway apart is its visual project canvas, where services, databases, and their connections are displayed graphically. Environments (production, staging, PR previews) are first-class concepts. The pricing model is usage-based with no hidden fees — you pay for CPU, memory, network, and disk actually consumed.

Railway has attracted a loyal following among indie developers, startups, and hobbyists who found the post-Heroku landscape confusing. The platform has grown to serve hundreds of thousands of projects, with steady month-over-month growth.

The company raised a $20 million Series A in 2023 led by Redpoint Ventures. Despite being much smaller than competitors like Vercel or Render, Railway has built a passionate community around its product through responsive support, an active Discord server, and a rapid feature release cadence.

Headquartered in San Francisco with a small, mostly remote team, Railway continues to expand its platform capabilities while maintaining the simplicity that attracted developers in the first place.
