Rancher Labs was founded in 2014 to simplify Kubernetes adoption for enterprises. The company’s flagship product, Rancher, is an open-source multi-cluster Kubernetes management platform that lets teams deploy and manage Kubernetes clusters across any infrastructure — on-premises, in the cloud, or at the edge.
Rancher’s appeal lies in its unified management console. Teams can provision new clusters, import existing ones, manage access control, deploy applications via a built-in app catalog, and monitor everything from a single dashboard. It supports multiple Kubernetes distributions including RKE (Rancher’s own), K3s, EKS, AKS, and GKE.
K3s, Rancher’s lightweight Kubernetes distribution, became particularly popular for edge computing and IoT scenarios. Packaged as a single binary under 100MB, K3s can run on resource-constrained devices like Raspberry Pis while remaining fully certified Kubernetes.
SUSE acquired Rancher Labs in 2020 for approximately $600 million. Under SUSE’s ownership, the Rancher platform continues to be developed as open source. The Rancher community remains active, with thousands of contributors and users managing millions of Kubernetes clusters worldwide.
