Roblox isn’t just a game — it’s an entire platform where anyone can create and publish interactive experiences. Founded in 2004 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in San Mateo, California, Roblox launched publicly in 2006 and has since become one of the biggest entertainment platforms in the world, especially among younger audiences.

The numbers are staggering. As of 2024, Roblox has over 70 million daily active users, with the vast majority under 18. The platform hosts millions of user-created experiences spanning every genre imaginable — from obstacle courses and role-playing games to virtual concerts and educational simulations. Developers on the platform earned over $740 million in 2023 through Roblox’s developer exchange program.

Roblox went public via direct listing on the NYSE in March 2021, with shares opening at $64.50 and the company achieving a valuation of around $38 billion on its first day. The COVID-19 pandemic was a major growth catalyst, as kids stuck at home flocked to the platform.

The company uses its own currency called Robux, which players purchase with real money and spend on in-game items, accessories, and experiences. This economy is massive — Roblox reported $2.7 billion in revenue for 2023.

Roblox has faced scrutiny around child safety, with concerns about content moderation, predatory monetization practices targeting young users, and labor questions around how young developers are compensated. The company has invested significantly in safety tools and moderation, but these remain ongoing challenges given the platform’s scale and demographics.
