Sega’s history in gaming stretches back to the 1960s, and the company’s journey from arcade machines to console wars to third-party publishing reads like a condensed history of the industry itself. Originally founded as Service Games to supply coin-operated amusement machines to American military bases in Japan, the company became Sega Enterprises in 1965.

The company’s console era peaked with the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive), which went head-to-head with Nintendo’s SNES in the early 1990s and created one of gaming’s greatest rivalries. Sonic the Hedgehog became Sega’s mascot and a pop culture icon. The Dreamcast, launched in 1998, was ahead of its time with built-in modem for online play but was commercially overwhelmed by the PlayStation 2. Sega exited the console hardware market in 2001.

Since going third-party, Sega has built an impressive portfolio of studios and franchises. The Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, has grown from a niche Japanese franchise to a global hit, with Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth selling millions in 2024. Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload brought Atlus’s RPG franchise to new heights. Total War (developed by Creative Assembly) is the dominant series in historical strategy gaming.

Sega completed its acquisition of Rovio Entertainment (Angry Birds) in 2023 for $775 million, boosting its mobile gaming presence. The Sonic franchise has been revitalized through successful movies (over $700 million combined box office) and strong game releases like Sonic Frontiers.

Sega Sammy Holdings, the parent company, is publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and operates across gaming, pachislot/pachinko machines, resort facilities, and entertainment.
