Stability AI was founded in 2020 by Emad Mostaque in London. The company burst onto the scene in August 2022 with the public release of Stable Diffusion, an open-source text-to-image model that anyone could download and run on their own hardware. That release was a pivotal moment for generative AI — it put powerful image generation in the hands of millions.

Stable Diffusion became wildly popular, spawning thousands of fine-tuned models, community tools like Automatic1111’s web UI, and entire ecosystems of plugins and extensions. The model’s open nature stood in contrast to DALL-E and Midjourney, which were only accessible through APIs or Discord bots.

Stability AI raised over $100 million at a reported $1 billion valuation, but the company faced significant turbulence. Emad Mostaque resigned as CEO in March 2024 amid reports of financial difficulties and internal challenges. The company went through leadership changes and restructuring as it worked to find a sustainable business model.

Beyond image generation, Stability AI released models for video (Stable Video Diffusion), audio (Stable Audio), 3D (Stable Zero123), and language (StableLM). Their work on Stable Diffusion XL and subsequent versions continued to push quality forward. Despite the corporate challenges, Stability AI’s contribution to open-source AI has been enormous — Stable Diffusion fundamentally changed what people expect from generative image tools and showed that open models could compete with closed ones.
