Suno was founded in 2023 by Mikey Shulman, Georg Kucsko, Martin Camacho, and Keenan Freyberg in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The team includes former researchers from Kensho (an S&P Global company) with backgrounds in machine learning and audio processing.

Suno raised $125 million in a Series B round in mid-2024, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners at a $500 million valuation. The company had previously raised seed funding of $3 million.

Suno’s AI generates complete songs from text descriptions — users type a genre, mood, or topic and receive a full track with vocals, instrumentation, and even generated lyrics. The v3 and v3.5 models produce songs up to four minutes long with noticeably improved audio quality and musical coherence compared to earlier versions.

The platform attracted over 10 million users within its first year. It’s accessible through a web app and has been integrated into Microsoft Copilot. Suno offers both free and paid tiers, with paid users getting commercial usage rights.

The music industry has responded with both excitement and concern — major labels filed copyright lawsuits against Suno in mid-2024, arguing the models were trained on copyrighted music. This legal battle is shaping how AI-generated content will be regulated. Suno employs around 50 people and continues to improve its generation quality.
