Swell was founded in 2019 by Eric Ingram, who’d previously built and sold a traditional e-commerce business. He experienced the pain of working with rigid platforms firsthand and wanted to create something that gave developers real flexibility without sacrificing the merchant experience.

The platform provides a headless commerce backend with a clean REST and GraphQL API. It covers products, subscriptions, orders, carts, accounts, and content — all configurable through a well-designed admin panel. Developers build frontends with whatever framework they want, while merchants manage operations through the dashboard without touching code.

Swell’s data model is unusually flexible. Custom fields, content models, and product structures can be defined without writing schemas or migrations. That makes it particularly appealing for brands with non-standard product types — configurable goods, digital products, bundles, or subscription boxes.

The platform includes native subscription management, which many headless commerce solutions bolt on as an afterthought. Merchants can set up recurring orders, flexible billing cycles, and subscriber-specific pricing directly in the admin. The checkout supports multiple payment methods and handles tax calculation automatically.

Swell targets mid-market brands that have outgrown Shopify’s customization limits but don’t need the complexity (or cost) of commercetools or Salesforce Commerce Cloud. The team is small — around 30 people — but the product has attracted brands that value developer experience and clean architecture.
