Tendermint Inc. (later rebranded as Ignite) was the original company behind the Cosmos ecosystem, building the foundational technology for an “internet of blockchains.” Founded by Jae Kwon in 2014, with Ethan Buchman joining as a key co-founder, the team developed both the Tendermint consensus engine and the Cosmos SDK — two pieces of software that have shaped how many modern blockchains are built.
The Tendermint consensus engine (now called CometBFT) provides a Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus mechanism that’s been adopted far beyond the Cosmos ecosystem. Chains like BNB Chain, Cronos, and many others have used Tendermint-based consensus as their foundation. It offers fast block times, instant finality, and a clean separation between consensus and application logic.
The Cosmos SDK is arguably the company’s most impactful contribution. It’s a modular framework for building application-specific blockchains, meaning each project gets its own sovereign chain rather than sharing resources on a general-purpose platform. This approach has been adopted by dozens of projects, from DeFi protocols to gaming platforms.
The Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, developed within the Cosmos ecosystem, enables different chains to transfer tokens and data between each other trustlessly. IBC has become one of the most active cross-chain messaging standards, connecting over 50 chains.
The Cosmos Hub, running on the ATOM token, serves as the economic center of this interconnected network. While the organization has gone through leadership changes and restructuring over the years, the technology Tendermint created continues to power a significant portion of the blockchain industry.
