Todoist has been around since 2007, making it one of the longest-running task management apps still actively developed. Amir Salihefendic founded the company (Doist) while living in Chile, and the team has been fully remote from day one — long before that became trendy.

The app’s strength is its natural language parsing. You can type “Call dentist every 3 months starting next Tuesday” and Todoist will set the right due date and recurrence automatically. It feels fast and frictionless, which is exactly what a task manager should be.

Todoist supports projects, sub-tasks, labels, filters, and priorities. The Karma system gamifies productivity by awarding points for completing tasks and tracking daily and weekly goals. It’s a small touch, but some users find it genuinely motivating.

The platform works on practically everything: web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, Apple Watch, and as browser extensions. There are also integrations with Google Calendar, Slack, IFTTT, and many other tools.

Doist has about 100 employees spread across 35+ countries. They also build Twist, a calmer alternative to Slack designed for asynchronous communication. The company has been profitable and bootstrapped — no venture capital.

Todoist’s free tier is usable with up to 5 active projects and 5 collaborators. The Pro plan at $4/month unlocks reminders, filters, and more projects. Business adds team features and admin controls.

With over 40 million users, Todoist has proven that a focused, well-executed task manager can thrive without trying to be everything.
