Toggl started in 2006 in Tallinn, Estonia, as a side project inside a software consultancy called Wise. The team needed a simple way to track billable hours, so they built one. That internal tool turned into Toggl Track, which now has over 5 million users worldwide.

Toggl Track’s strength is simplicity. You click a button, the timer starts. There’s no complex setup or onboarding. Entries can be tagged with projects, clients, and categories, and the reporting dashboard breaks down where time actually goes. It’s popular with freelancers, agencies, and consulting firms that bill by the hour.

The company expanded into two additional products: Toggl Plan (a visual project planning tool) and Toggl Hire (a skills-based hiring platform). All three products operate as separate business units under the Toggl umbrella.

Toggl has been a fully remote company since 2014, long before remote work became mainstream. The team of roughly 400 people is spread across more than 40 countries. The company is profitable and has never taken venture capital, which is rare in the SaaS world. Toggl’s approach has been to grow steadily and keep the product focused, rather than chasing enterprise deals with feature bloat.
