Founded in Bucharest in 2005 by Daniel Dines and Marius Tirca, the company spent years quietly building automation tools before exploding onto the global stage around 2017. Its platform lets businesses create software robots — “bots” — that mimic human actions inside applications, handling everything from invoice processing to employee onboarding workflows.
What sets UiPath apart is its full-stack approach to automation. The platform covers the entire lifecycle: discovering which processes are worth automating, building bots with a visual drag-and-drop studio, managing them at scale through Orchestrator, and measuring results. The company’s AI Center adds machine learning models into automation workflows, so bots can handle unstructured data like handwritten forms or natural language requests.
UiPath went public on the NYSE in April 2021 at a valuation north of $29 billion, making it one of the largest enterprise software IPOs of its era. The company serves thousands of organizations across banking, healthcare, manufacturing, and government. Its community edition — free for individual developers — helped build a massive ecosystem of citizen developers who don’t need deep coding skills to build automations. That bottom-up adoption model proved critical to landing enterprise deals.
