Varsity Tutors was founded in 2007 to make high-quality tutoring accessible beyond the usual in-person, premium-priced model. The platform connects students of all ages with expert tutors for one-on-one sessions, small group classes, and adaptive learning courses across hundreds of subjects.

The platform’s matching system pairs students with tutors based on subject expertise, teaching style, and scheduling preferences. Sessions happen over Varsity Tutors’ proprietary video platform, which includes a shared whiteboard, screen sharing, and document collaboration tools. All sessions are recorded so students can review material later.

Varsity Tutors doesn’t just do one-on-one tutoring anymore. The company expanded into group classes, test prep courses (SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT), and even adaptive practice tools that adjust question difficulty based on student performance. It also offers free community classes on a rotating schedule.

Nerdy Inc., the parent company of Varsity Tutors, went public via SPAC in 2021. The company has served millions of hours of tutoring and works with both individual families and institutional clients, including school districts that use the platform for supplemental instruction.

The tutor network includes over 40,000 vetted instructors. Varsity Tutors is selective — the company claims to accept fewer than 5% of tutor applicants. Pay varies by subject and session type, but experienced tutors can earn competitive hourly rates.

For students who need structured support beyond what free platforms offer, Varsity Tutors fills the gap between self-study resources and full-price private tutoring.
