Vimeo has carved out a distinct identity as the professional video platform, deliberately choosing not to compete with YouTube on volume and instead focusing on quality tools for businesses and creators. Founded in 2004 by Jake Lodwick and Zach Klein, it was actually one of the first sites to support HD video uploads.
IAC (InterActiveCorp) acquired Vimeo as part of its purchase of Connected Ventures in 2006, and it operated as an IAC subsidiary until spinning off as an independent public company in 2021. Under CEO Anjali Sud (who led from 2017 to 2023), Vimeo pivoted hard from being a consumer video-sharing site to a B2B SaaS video platform.
The pivot changed everything about the business. Vimeo now provides video hosting, creation, editing, live streaming, and analytics tools primarily to businesses. Its video player is ad-free and highly customizable, making it the preferred embed solution for companies that don’t want YouTube’s branding or recommendations appearing on their content. The platform generates over $400 million in annual revenue from subscriptions.
Vimeo’s creative community still matters. Filmmakers, musicians, and artists have long preferred Vimeo for its higher quality standards, lack of ads, and clean viewing experience. The annual Vimeo Staff Picks remain a curated showcase of outstanding short-form video content.
The company has invested in AI tools for video creation, including script generation, automatic editing, and text-to-video features. Vimeo Enterprise serves large organizations with features like single sign-on, advanced analytics, and video library management. The company went through layoffs in 2023 as it focused on profitability, and it achieved positive free cash flow under new CEO Philip Moyer.
