YouTube Gaming has become a serious contender in the live streaming space by building on YouTube’s massive existing infrastructure. Google first launched YouTube Gaming as a standalone app in 2015, but shut it down in 2019 and folded gaming content back into the main YouTube platform with a dedicated Gaming section.

That integration turned out to be a smart move. YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, enormous existing audience, and superior video-on-demand capabilities have attracted major gaming creators and streamers. High-profile Twitch departures to YouTube — including DrLupo, TimTheTatman, Ludwig, and Sykkuno — gave the platform significant credibility in the streaming world.

YouTube Gaming benefits from features that Twitch can’t easily match: permanent VOD storage (Twitch deletes most after 60 days), a powerful search and discovery engine, and the ability for streamers to build audiences through both live content and uploaded videos on the same channel. For viewers, the experience is smooth since it’s just YouTube.

In 2023, YouTube reported that gaming content had surpassed 800 billion all-time views. Live gaming streams regularly attract hundreds of thousands of concurrent viewers during major events and game launches. The platform has also invested in gaming-specific features like Premieres, Super Chat donations, and channel memberships.

Monetization on YouTube Gaming works through the existing YouTube Partner Program — ads, Super Chats, memberships, and merchandise shelves. While Twitch still leads in total hours watched for live streaming, YouTube’s broader ecosystem and creator tools have made it the preferred platform for streamers who want to build a lasting content library.
